Southern Hemp Network - Nashville TN

A Professional Network of Growers, Farmers, Processors, Extractors, Formulators, Wholesalers, Distributors, and Retailers

Opinions are like a lot of things.  Everyone has one.  This is our view and opinion.  Links below are to other people’s opinions.

The State of the Hemp Industry

The bad news. 2020 did not prove to be the year the hemp industry had hoped for.  We were expecting the FDA to issue rules opening up a broad market extractors and farmers needed.

What we got was nothing from the FDA and a reminder from the DEA of their opinion and role in the United States hemp industry.

Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia and other states saw solid 2018 prices and the growing awareness 2019 brought with record numbers of licensed growers and record low prices and no demand.  2020 growers did not find the price or demand to support their efforts.  2021 has far fewer growers than 2020.

Many of the largest processors and extractors have closed or bankrupted.  Farmers have thrown in the towel.  The slow movement of government has trickled down to the small family farms looking for an opportunity to pay their bills or get ahead.

The good news.  The FDA is working on their hemp rules.  The United States Congress is working on a bill directing FDA to move the industry forward.

The USDA has allowed states to choose 2014 rules for another year (2021).

The DEA carefully worded their interim rules and has not made their intentions clear on enforcement, yet…

Is there a big future for hemp?  Yes.  Is it 2021? Maybe not.  There is some movement in sales.  The demand for extractable biomass is limited.  Flower for smoke sells, although it is not legal in all states.  It is just a small market and the volume is limited. Prices are low. Labor is high.

Welcome to the Future
Welcome to
the
Southern Hemp Network

We have seen six years of hemp grown since the 2014 Farm Bill allowed for state pilot programs.  We have seen the rapid rise and fall of many cutting edge and leading edge businesses, farmers and innovators.

We have seen the failures of government to act, the failures of farmers, organizations and businesses in this re-birth of a very old agricultural based industry.

We are seeing new extraction facilities being built.  New manufacturers of CBD and hemp products are coming online.  New processing and decortication operations are opening real opportunities for  fiber and seed farmers.  Positive things are happening.

The Southern Hemp Network is for everyone involved in the industrial hemp industry that believes this is a correction.  It is a reckoning of dreams  and reality.  The survivors will be the players of the future.  We have all lost friends, clients and customers on the way.  We look forward to the coming of age of a new and ancient agricultural industry.  Southern Hemp Network Membership is free.   Join and check it out.
